  1. Dated October, 2007 :
It is a good and quite informative description. My only suggestion is that date of travel , at least month and year may be mentioned , so that future tourists can assess the change.

  2. Jayasri,

This trip was undertaken in Jan 2004.
The year is there in the foot print of the article.

  5. One of the best memoirs. I have travelled a lot and had very good and bad experiences and I would start making these for the benefit of others. I am planning to visit in January next month and hope though it is old one but would be very useful.

  9. Thanks for your memoirs. It has helped a lot.
I had been to Puri twice in recent times and agree with everything you wrote( things haven’t changed much in the 4 1/2 years interval!)
I found local people to be polite, honest and helpful. *this doesn’t include auto or taxi wallahs :)*
Chilika lake is a serene beauty, trip to NandanKanan was satisfying and temples are pious and beautiful, but the Pandas(temple priests) can be a severe nuisance. On my first trip one Panda tracked me a km away from Jagannath Temple despite my polite refusal all the way along. 2nd day,a panda riding a bicyle stopped and offered his services some 2 km away while I was busy looking for something to shop…what more can I say!
In case you decide on hiring a panda, it’s preferable to have loose change in denomination of Rs5 or so. There are numerous small shrines inside the Jaganath temple where you will be asked to offer respects to. And same is true for Lingaraj Temple too.
Note: you don’t have to pay anything to visit the Temple or to have darshan of idols. If you wish to offer puja then you have to make payment at the govt counter located inside the temple premises and a panda will be assigned for the rituals.
    Thanks
